Tragic news from Nepal’s Dolakha district as an avalanche swept through a climbing expedition on Yalung Ri mountain, killing seven people. The incident, which occurred Monday morning, involved a group of climbers, including five foreigners and two Nepali guides. Officials confirmed the fatalities, stating that the avalanche struck near the base camp, burying climbers under meters of snow.
Rescue teams are working tirelessly to find the remaining five climbers who are presumed to be trapped under the snow. So far, eight injured individuals have been rescued and brought to Kathmandu for medical care. The international climbers represented Italy, Canada, Germany, and France, and were accompanied by their local guides.
Navigating the difficult terrain and persistent bad weather presented major challenges for the rescue helicopters attempting to reach the disaster site. Survivors have expressed frustration over the time it took for rescue teams to arrive, indicating that a faster response could have saved more lives. The expedition was focused on acclimatization for the 6,332-meter Dolma Khang peak, with Yalung Ri included in their itinerary.
