Ahead of his first ODI assignment as captain against Australia, Shubman Gill has provided clarity on his relationship with Rohit Sharma. Gill has assured that the transition in captaincy has not impacted their camaraderie, and he continues to benefit from Sharma’s extensive experience.
‘The narrative outside is different, but among us, nothing has changed. Everything is the same as it was before, and that is very helpful,’ Gill told reporters. He highlighted his open approach to seeking advice from senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. ‘I go to them and ask what they think, how they would do it if they were in my place,’ he elaborated, emphasizing his decision-making process which incorporates his own judgment.
The series also marks the highly anticipated return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who will be playing together for India for the first time since the ICC Champions Trophy final earlier this year.
Gill conveyed his eagerness to uphold the legacy of former Indian captains, including MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma. ‘Carrying the legacy forward… I had numerous conversations with Rohit and Virat about how to take the team forward, and those leanings and experiences will help our team,’ he shared.
The first ODI is scheduled for Sunday at Optus Stadium in Perth. This series represents Gill’s debut as ODI captain, following Rohit Sharma’s stepping down from the role. India will play three ODIs and five T20Is in Australia.
Gill’s recent captaincy stint leading India in a five-match Test series in England demonstrated his leadership capabilities. He not only guided the team to a 2-2 series draw but also achieved significant personal milestones, scoring a record 754 runs.
