U.S. President Donald Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House, stressing the critical importance of an immediate cessation of hostilities with Russia. Trump expressed confidence in his diplomatic skills to achieve peace in Europe, referencing his prior mediation efforts in challenging international disputes.
Trump indicated that Russian President Vladimir Putin shares a similar objective of concluding the war, which has resulted in considerable loss of life. The two leaders are set to hold a further summit in Hungary in the near future. Following their meeting, Trump posted on Truth Social, characterizing the discussion with Zelenskyy as “very interesting and cordial.” He advised Zelenskyy to end the conflict and negotiate with Putin, suggesting a path where both sides could claim success and prevent further casualties and expenditures.
In a significant development, Trump also conveyed his reluctance to proceed with selling Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, citing national security needs and a desire to ensure the U.S. possesses adequate defense capabilities. “We would much rather have the war be over to be honest,” Trump commented, indicating a preference for de-escalation. This statement comes after Russia had previously voiced strong objections to such arms transfers. President Zelenskyy articulated that his stance towards Putin stems from the act of invasion, stating, “They attacked us, so they are an enemy for us. It is not about someone just hating someone else.”
