A somber recovery was made in West Singhbhum’s Tantanagar police station area, as the body of Kunal Birua, a 15-year-old student, was found in the Sangam River on Tuesday, four days after he drowned. Kunal had joined his friends for a picnic and football match on Saturday when he tragically lost his life in the river’s depths. The coordinated efforts of the police, local residents, and professional divers were instrumental in retrieving the young student’s body.
The tragic loss has brought immense sorrow to the area, with Kunal’s family understandably devastated. Chaibasa Sadar SDO Sandeep Anurag Topno and DSP Bahaman Tuti visited the site to understand the circumstances. They also went to the Nagar police station to debrief the 24 students who were present, helping to de-escalate tensions and restore calm.
Kunal was a student at Saint Xavier’s School in Chaibasa. According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred during a football game when the ball fell into the river. Kunal entered the water to get the ball back but was overcome by the depth. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination to Chaibasa Sadar Hospital, and the police have commenced a formal investigation. Officials are continuing to provide solace and support to the grieving family.
