Tesla, the electric vehicle company led by Elon Musk, introduced the Model Y in India on July 15, 2025. Deliveries were initiated in late September, about two months post-launch. In that timeframe, Tesla delivered 60 Model Y units to Indian buyers. Though the volume is modest, it signifies a crucial entry for Tesla into the Indian market, representing their first vehicle available in the country.
Vehicle portal data shows that BMW sold 307 electric vehicles, Mercedes-Benz sold 95, and Volvo sold 22 during the same period. The delivery of 60 Tesla units, priced around ₹60 lakh (ex-showroom), positions the Model Y in the luxury EV market, alongside established European brands.
The Model Y offers two primary versions:
* Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) with a range of 500 km (WLTP standard)
* Long Range RWD offering a range of 622 km
Deliveries currently focus on the RWD version, with the Long Range model slated for release in the subsequent months. The starting price for the Model Y is ₹59.89 lakh (ex-showroom). Tesla began accepting Model Y bookings in July and has gathered over 600 orders. Despite the initial anticipation of importing 2,500 units yearly, the company has adjusted the import volume to 350 to 500 units annually, considering demand. Tesla is poised to expedite Model Y deliveries around the Diwali holiday season.
