The return of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to the Indian team is a moment of excitement for cricket fans. After a 7-month hiatus, the two prominent batsmen are set to make their comeback in international cricket. Both Virat and Rohit have been included in the Indian squad for the ODI series against Australia. This has raised questions regarding their potential participation in the 2027 World Cup and if this series could signify their retirement. Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar shared some surprising insights.
Following India’s victory over the West Indies in the first Test in Ahmedabad on October 4th, the squad for the Australia tour was announced. Agarkar, the head of the selection committee, was present. The announcement highlighted two main points: the return of Virat and Rohit, and the appointment of Shubman Gill as the new ODI captain. Agarkar discussed both topics, with the primary focus on the selection and future of Rohit and Virat.
One of the most surprising statements came from Agarkar regarding the participation of the two in the 2027 World Cup. When asked about their availability for the tournament, Agarkar said that neither had made a firm decision. He stated, “Virat and Rohit haven’t fully committed to the World Cup yet.” This statement caused a stir, as both Virat and Rohit had previously expressed their desire to play in the 2027 ODI World Cup. Consequently, there’s speculation that they might retire from ODI cricket after this series.
Agarkar didn’t make any announcements or provide any indications from the selection committee on the matter. He did indicate that discussing their World Cup participation was premature. The former Indian fast bowler also refuted rumors suggesting this tour would be Virat and Rohit’s last international appearance, confirming he hadn’t heard of any ‘farewell series’ discussions or rumors.
Additionally, Agarkar, along with the rest of the team, including the two batsmen, clarified that players not involved in international cricket must play domestic cricket. The focus will now be on whether these two players will be participating in the Vijay Hazare Trophy after the Australia tour.
