Emirates Airlines has decided to prohibit the use of power banks on its flights. This has surprised numerous travelers who use power banks to power their devices during flights. The airline’s decision has sparked curiosity about the reasoning behind it.
Under the new Emirates policy, passengers can carry only one power bank, provided it has a capacity of less than 100 watt-hours (Wh). It’s crucial that the power bank’s capacity is clearly labeled. While the power bank can be brought on board, its use is not permitted.
The main reason for the restriction is related to safety. Power banks use lithium-ion or lithium-polymer batteries, which can become excessively hot and may catch fire. This phenomenon, known as thermal runaway, occurs when the battery temperature rises, potentially leading to fire or explosion.
This step has been taken to reduce battery-related risks on the aircraft, especially those linked to budget power banks lacking safety features. Emirates Airlines has implemented this measure to safeguard its passengers. Passengers traveling with Emirates are advised to fully charge their phones and gadgets before heading to the airport.
