The White House has accused Democrats of being the cause of the government shutdown. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that Democrats in Congress have “officially shut down” the U.S. government. According to Leavitt, House Republicans had passed a nonpartisan bill proposing to extend the current government funding until November 21st, but almost all Democratic senators voted against the bill. Leavitt highlighted that this bill was nearly identical to the one approved by Democrats six months prior. She also stated that Democrats had previously passed similar clean funding bills multiple times during Biden’s administration. Leavitt accused the Democratic party of engaging in “pure partisan politics” and claimed that the country cannot afford “taxpayer-funded free healthcare to illegals.” The U.S. government shut down after Congress was unable to pass a funding measure. Both parties are publicly attempting to avoid being blamed for the funding lapse. Republicans urge Democrats to agree to a funding extension. Democratic leaders Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer have placed the blame on Donald Trump and Republicans.
