Stéphane Dujarric, the spokesperson for United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, made a strong statement after the General Meeting. Dujarric, speaking to Arab News, stated that the UN is powerless. He described it as an organization with no real authority, where the Secretary-General is unable to act independently.
Dujarric emphasized that global peace depends on major changes within the UN and a fairer distribution of veto power.
Dujarric explained that the UN was created to establish peace globally, end international crime, and prevent wars. However, the current reality is different, with nations accused of war crimes taking actions against the UN.
Israel exemplifies this situation. Despite accusations of war crimes against its Prime Minister, Israel has prevented the UN Secretary-General from entering the country. In addition, Israel, with the help of its allies, has been working to reduce UN funding.
During the interview, Dujarric highlighted Guterres’ two priorities. One is to end conflicts through diplomatic efforts, which has not yet been successful.
The second is to reform the United Nations, which Guterres has attempted, including advocating for permanent UN membership for India, Brazil, and an African nation.
Dujarric noted that powerful nations are blocking these changes. He warned that if these changes don’t happen, the organization will become irrelevant and ineffective.
Former US President Donald Trump criticized the UN during a meeting, noting that the UN only sends out letters instead of working to prevent wars. He asserted that he had to fulfill the responsibilities that the UN was failing to address.
