The internet is an essential resource in modern society. However, the government sometimes restricts internet access across entire areas in response to unrest or violence. In the recent incident in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, a 48-hour internet ban was imposed following violence related to the ‘I Love Muhammad’ dispute. This action is intended to stop the spread of misinformation.
Reasons for Internet Shutdowns
The internet has, at times, been misused to incite communal tensions and violence in India. Social media enables rapid propagation of fake news, rumors, and incendiary content. The temporary suspension of internet services in affected areas is a measure to maintain order and contain unrest.
How are Internet Services Shut Down?
Think of it like turning off your home Wi-Fi router. If the router is off, your devices won’t receive the Wi-Fi signal, and the internet won’t function. Likewise, mobile towers transmit internet signals.
To shut down internet access in a city or area, the government orders the shutdown of the local mobile towers. Telecom companies respond by ceasing network services from these towers.
ISPs and Government Control
Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in India are subject to government orders. The government can instruct ISPs to restrict internet access in specific regions or states. Once the order is given, ISPs cut off network access, resulting in an immediate internet outage across the city.
