Celebrating the birth anniversary of Yash Chopra, a legendary figure in Indian cinema, it is evident that he holds a unique place in the history of film. He is the only filmmaker in the world to have consistently delivered successful movies across all decades since Partition. When combined with his elder brother, B.R. Chopra, their impact defines Indian cinema’s foremost family.
Yash Chopra started his career as an assistant and later as a director for his brother. After his marriage in 1973, he established Yashraj Films, producing the hit *Daag*. His first film, *Dhool Ka Phool*, reflected his brother’s social focus. Chopra’s focus was on entertaining audiences, while also addressing social themes in his movies. *Dharmputra* was pulled from theaters due to controversy.
*Waqt* in 1965, marked a turning point in his career, with its distinct style. Chopra’s films introduced audiences to a world of luxury. He had a deep appreciation for women and aimed to showcase their beauty in his films. His subsequent work, *Aadmi Aur Insaan*, showed his appreciation for high living. *Daag* was a film that generated much debate.
*Deewaar* in 1975 was a great hit, further boosting Amitabh Bachchan’s stardom. Yash Chopra and the Big B collaborated again on *Kabhi Kabhie*. In 1978, *Trishul* was a better-scripted film, and *Kala Patthar* followed it. The 1980s presented a period of non-success. Yet, *Chandni* marked a turning point in 1989, reinventing Sridevi’s career. His son’s movie, *Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge*, was a huge success, and *Dil To Pagal Hai* in 1997 saw Yash Chopra return to directing.
