Donald Trump suggested that Ukraine can reclaim all territories occupied by Russia. Shortly after a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the United Nations General Assembly, Trump clarified his position in a social media post. He wrote, ‘I believe that with the support of the European Union, Ukraine is capable of fighting and restoring all of Ukraine to its original borders. This can be achieved through time, patience, and financial support from Europe, particularly NATO.’ During a bilateral meeting, Trump was asked if NATO should shoot down Russian aircraft in its airspace, to which he responded in the affirmative. When questioned about his trust in Russian President Vladimir Putin, he indicated he would respond in about a month. Trump’s post emphasized his belief that Ukraine, with EU backing, can fight and achieve victory, restoring its territory. The post did not mention potential new U.S. sanctions or tariffs concerning Russia’s energy sector, although Trump has previously discussed these with European leaders. The post also did not address direct U.S. arms sales to Ukraine, but implied NATO members would continue to purchase U.S. weapons and subsequently transfer them to Ukraine.
