The Dasara festival in Karnataka, a significant annual event, began with its inauguration at the historic Chamundi Temple in Mysore. The opening ceremony was performed by Muslim Banoo Mushtaq, a Booker Prize winner, which was met with resistance and disapproval. The matter was taken to the Supreme Court, which supported the state government’s decision, stating the event’s official nature and opposing religious discrimination. Despite the court’s decision, the festival’s launch was accompanied by protests.
Mushtaq, at the inauguration, underscored the importance of unity, inclusivity, and cultural harmony. She offered flowers and lit a lamp at the temple, and described the event as the greatest honor of her life, celebrating the culture and harmony of the region.
During the inaugural ceremony, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s speech was interrupted by some people who started to leave. The CM, visibly angry, addressed them sternly and instructed the police to stop anyone from leaving before finishing his address.
During his address at the Mysore Dasara inauguration, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated that Banoo Mushtaq, though a Muslim, is foremost a human being, and that all people are part of the same humanity. He pointed out that a lack of mutual affection negates the essence of humanity.
Mushtaq, addressing her critics, stated that her speech conveyed a message of unity. She called for the creation of a society built on love where everyone receives equal opportunities and care.
She expressed a desire for unity and the elimination of hatred and intolerance. She also hoped that the lamp lit at the festival would spread peace, patience, and justice throughout the world. The Mysore Dasara festival, which has been celebrated for over 500 years, has significant importance across India, initiated by Raja Wodeyar I in 1610 to honor Goddess Chamundeshwari.
Banoo Mushtaq, a 62-year-old Kannada writer, social activist, and the recipient of the 2025 International Booker Prize, was selected as the chief guest by the state government in recognition of her accomplishments.
