Saudi Arabia’s military strength is becoming increasingly important, and it is no longer exclusively associated with oil and the holy sites of Islam. According to the most recent Global Firepower 2025 report, Saudi Arabia is placed 24th out of 145 military powers. A recent defense agreement with Pakistan exemplifies Saudi Arabia’s increasing influence.
The agreement between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan is significant because of the mutual defense clause, which states that an attack on one country is considered an attack on both. The accord’s acknowledgment of Pakistan’s nuclear capabilities has increased its importance. This arrangement, signed by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, may reshape the security landscape of the Gulf and South Asia.
Saudi Arabia has depended on the United States for security for many years, but this reliance is changing. Today, Saudi Arabia has a strong military and a large arsenal of modern weapons. Saudi Arabia is also expanding its defense cooperation with China. Saudi Arabia is now an important partner for both the United States and China in the politics of West Asia because of its dual engagement.
Saudi Arabia has a sizable military, with around 257,000 active soldiers and 150,000 paramilitary personnel. The army, air force, and navy are all well-equipped to defend against any outside threats. It’s worth noting that Saudi Arabia doesn’t have a reserve force, despite having such a big active army.
The Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF), which has over a thousand aircraft, is a significant asset. Its inventory includes cutting-edge F-15E Strike Eagles, Tornado IDS (UK-made), and Eurofighter Typhoons. Additionally, the air force has a substantial fleet of over 185 helicopters. With its air power, Saudi Arabia has become a powerful player in the Middle East, capable of overpowering opponents from the air.
On the ground, Saudi Arabia’s army is also a formidable presence. With more than 22,860 pieces of military hardware, the army is regarded as the most powerful in the Gulf region. US-made Abrams tanks, Pattons, and Paladins are among the armaments. Recently, Saudi Arabia ordered 177 modern M109A6 tanks from the US, and its National Guard already has 156 Caesar SPH trucks. Infantry fighting vehicles, utility vehicles, and advanced air defense systems add to the army’s strength on the ground.
Even though the Saudi navy is still developing, it has 62 warships, including frigates, corvettes, and patrol ships. The country has ordered four Freedom-class multi-mission warships from the US. This navy is essential for maintaining control of the strategic waterways of the Gulf.
