The tourism industry in Nepal is grappling with the aftermath of recent anti-government rallies and violent protests. These events occurred just as the most active tourist season was beginning. The tourism department and hotel owners report a 30% decline in tourist arrivals compared to the previous year. Many bookings have also been canceled because of the violence.
In Kathmandu’s primary tourist area, Thamel, businesses such as shops, restaurants, and pubs have resumed operations, but the lack of tourists has created an unusual stillness. The anti-government violence caused 72 fatalities and injured more than 2,000 people. Approximately 1.2 million tourists visit Nepal each year, with tourism contributing 8% to the country’s GDP.
