The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of former bureaucrat Amit Khare as Secretary to the newly elected Vice President, C.P. Radhakrishnan. The appointment is for a three-year period and comes with the rank and pay of a Secretary, effective from the date Khare assumes his duties, as per an order from the Department of Personnel and Training.
The official order states that Amit Khare, a retired 1985-batch IAS officer of the Jharkhand cadre, will serve as Secretary to the Vice-President of India.
Khare, who served as Advisor to the Prime Minister from October 2021, played a significant role in the development and implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. He was responsible for handling social sector subjects under the Prime Minister’s Office.
Khare’s career includes positions as Secretary, Information & Broadcasting; Secretary, School Education & Literacy; and Secretary, Higher Education. He is also recognized for bringing the ‘fodder scam’ of Bihar to light.
He is an alumnus of St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, and holds a postgraduate degree in Business Administration from IIM Ahmedabad. He also completed his schooling at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Hinoo in 1977.
C. P. Radhakrishnan was sworn in as India’s 15th Vice President during a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office. Radhakrishnan, representing the NDA, secured 452 votes, defeating the Opposition candidate B. Sudershan Reddy who received 300 votes. Before his nomination, Radhakrishnan was the Governor of Maharashtra.
