Manipur is gearing up for a possible visit from Prime Minister Modi around September 13th, with heightened security measures in place. This potential visit comes after the ethnic tensions between the Meitei and Kuki communities. To ensure safety and security, the government has implemented a ban on air guns in the Churachandpur district. However, there has been no official confirmation regarding the Prime Minister’s trip. Churachandpur District Magistrate Dharun Kumar issued an order, prohibiting the use, carrying, and display of air guns within the district, emphasizing the need for security during the Prime Minister’s visit. Anyone found violating this order will face immediate legal consequences. The government’s directive explained that extensive security arrangements are necessary to facilitate the PM’s visit to Churachandpur, emphasizing the importance of a smooth and secure event. The presence of air guns could potentially cause concern and pose a security risk; therefore, their use and possession are strictly prohibited. Legal action will be taken against anyone who violates this order. The Superintendent of Police in Churachandpur will ensure compliance with the order. While a visit is anticipated, there have been no official statements released from New Delhi or Imphal confirming the visit. The state has been holding numerous meetings in preparation for the Prime Minister’s visit. Churachandpur is a key location for the Kuki community. In May 2023, ethnic violence between the Kuki and Meitei communities led to the CM’s resignation and the implementation of President’s rule. More than 250 lives were lost, and many people were displaced because of the violence. If it proceeds, the visit will mark the Prime Minister’s first visit to Manipur since the unrest.
