The National September 11 Memorial & Museum has completed testing of its annual ‘Tribute in Light.’ This week, the lights will shine, paying tribute to the lives lost in the 9/11 attacks and honoring the enduring spirit of New York. The event is held to commemorate the 24th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. According to Beth Hillman, president of the Memorial and Museum, ‘Tribute in Light’ symbolizes remembrance for the nearly 3,000 victims of 9/11. She noted the substantial number of Americans, over 100 million, who were too young to have personal memories of that day, highlighting the importance of ongoing public awareness. Antoula Catsimatides, whose brother was a victim, sees the light-tribute as a symbol of hope and courage for New Yorkers. The light installation was first unveiled on March 11, 2002, six months after the attacks on the Twin Towers, during the rescue operations at Ground Zero. The illumination will be a yearly tradition, starting on the evening of September 11 and lasting until the morning of September 12, with the tradition continuing until 2025. It is visible from a distance of up to 60 miles from Lower Manhattan, offering visibility for those in Long Island and New Jersey when the weather is clear. This tribute was created through a joint effort by The Municipal Art Society and Creative Time, with the involvement of a team of artists. The lighting design was by Space Cannon, with the project overseen by Michael Ahern Production Services (MAPS).
