Following the Nepali government’s ban on popular social media platforms like Facebook, YouTube, and X, widespread protests have erupted. The youth, particularly Gen-Z, are at the forefront of these demonstrations. Clashes between protestors and police during an attempt to enter the parliament building in Kathmandu led to one death. A curfew has been implemented in several areas of Kathmandu.
Ashirwad Raj, a student protestor, commented on the situation, highlighting the curfew in Kathmandu. He noted that their peaceful protests were met with a forceful response by security forces. He expressed sorrow over the injuries and the death of a fellow protestor. Raj emphasized the significance of the protests given the restrictions on 26 social media apps, and their determination to be heard.
He drew parallels with youth movements in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Raj emphasized that they were motivated to work for positive change. He also addressed efforts to disrupt the protest, explaining that certain individuals tried to infiltrate the demonstrations. The protesters carried Indian flags, and their objective was to reach the parliament building.
News reports indicate that large numbers of demonstrators gathered in Kathmandu, breaking through security barriers and surrounding the parliament. Police responded with tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd. The curfew, as stated by the Kathmandu district office spokesperson, will remain in effect until 10 PM local time.
