A diplomatic dispute has emerged between France and U.S. Senator Marco Rubio concerning the impact of France’s recognition of Palestinian statehood on the Israel-Hamas ceasefire talks. The French Foreign Ministry responded to Rubio’s accusations, refuting his claim that the recognition of Palestinian statehood caused the failure of hostage negotiations. The ministry’s response, posted on X, presented evidence that included a screenshot of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s statement about the breakdown in peace talks, followed by French President Emmanuel Macron’s statement on the recognition of Palestine. Macron stated that Hamas must be disarmed and should not be involved in governing the Gaza Strip. Rubio had previously criticized Macron’s decision as ‘reckless’ and said it set back peace efforts. He asserted that Hamas ended negotiations and increased its demands immediately after France’s announcement. France’s intention to officially recognize Palestinian statehood at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly was also highlighted. Additionally, leaders from Australia, Canada, Portugal, and the United Kingdom are scheduled to recognize the State of Palestine. Belgium has joined calls for recognition and ‘firm sanctions’ against the Israeli government. Macron also announced that France and Saudi Arabia will co-chair a major conference on the Two-State Solution in New York on September 22, and he urged the United States to reverse its decision to deny visas to Palestinian officials, emphasizing the importance of Palestinian participation in the conference.
