A team from the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) recently visited Tihar Jail in Delhi as part of India’s efforts to secure the extradition of individuals such as Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi. The CPS team’s visit specifically targeted Jail No. 4, where first-time offenders and high-security prisoners are held. They examined the jail’s infrastructure, assessed security protocols, and engaged with inmates. This visit follows concerns raised by British courts regarding the conditions of Indian prisons, a crucial factor in extradition proceedings. India has responded by assuring the UK authorities that those extradited will be held in safe and lawful conditions, without illegal interrogation. The visiting UK team comprised four officials, and was joined by two officials from the British High Commission. They examined high-security areas and interacted with inmates. The visit was scheduled for July 16. Jail No. 4, referred to as a “Mulaija Jail,” separates first-time offenders from hardened criminals to foster rehabilitation. A high-security section may be developed within the jail for high-profile inmates. India has submitted 178 extradition requests to various countries, including 20 to the UK, as of 2024. Vijay Mallya is accused of defaulting on more than Rs 9,000 crore in bank loans. Nirav Modi is the main accused in the Rs 13,800 crore Punjab National Bank fraud. Nirav Modi has been officially designated a fugitive economic offender, and a UK court has approved his extradition.
