In the Indian automotive landscape, where SUVs are increasingly dominant, the Volkswagen Virtus has distinguished itself as the leading premium sedan. The Virtus has claimed the title of India’s best-selling premium sedan for 2025, maintaining the position it held in 2024, demonstrating its continued market success.
Between January and August 2025, the Virtus achieved sales of 13,853 units, showing a growth of approximately 9 percent compared to the previous year. The premium sedan segment saw a total of 37,575 units sold from January to July, with the Virtus accounting for a considerable 33% share of the market. This means that a significant proportion of consumers chose the Virtus. The ex-showroom prices for the Volkswagen Virtus start around 11.56 lakh and can go up to 19.40 lakh, depending on the trim level and the location.
The Virtus has outperformed its rivals, including the Honda City and Hyundai Verna. While these models remain popular, their sales have not matched the Virtus in recent months. Maruti Suzuki’s Ciaz has faced a challenging period, with no sales recorded in August 2025, in contrast to 707 units sold in August the previous year.
The Virtus’s popularity can be attributed to its design, performance, and safety features. It appeals to customers looking for a vehicle that combines everyday functionality with an engaging driving experience, giving it a competitive edge.
The Virtus comes with two petrol engine options:
* A 1.0-liter TSI engine that produces 113 bhp of power and 178 Nm of torque, available with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission.
* A 1.5-liter TSI engine that delivers 148 bhp of power and 250 Nm of torque, offered with a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission.
The Virtus’s success in a market heavily influenced by SUVs underscores its unique appeal and impact on the sedan segment.
