During the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the gathering, indirectly criticizing Pakistan concerning terrorism and also targeting the US for its protectionist, unilateral, and hegemonic stances. He also affirmed India’s unwavering commitment to a zero-tolerance approach towards cross-border terrorism, separatism, and extremism.
PM Modi began his address by noting the honor of speaking at the prestigious meeting in Tianjin, a city symbolizing progress and connectivity. On behalf of India’s 1.4 billion citizens, he conveyed greetings to all leaders and representatives. He expressed his gratitude to President Xi for hosting the summit and providing generous hospitality. The SCO has grown to ten full members from an initial six, encompassing approximately half the world’s population and a significant portion of the global economy. India is dedicated to the organization’s role in advancing regional stability, security, and prosperity.
He acknowledged the important role SCO has played in strengthening collaboration and mutual ties within the Asian region over the past 24 years. India, as an active member, has consistently played a positive role, with India’s approach to SCO based on three fundamental pillars: Security, Connectivity, and Opportunity.
The Prime Minister, without mentioning Pakistan by name, addressed the challenges presented by terrorism, separatism, and extremism. He emphasized that terrorism is a shared challenge for all of humankind. No nation or society can consider itself immune, and therefore, India has emphasized solidarity in combating terrorism, with the SCO playing a significant role. This year, India has spearheaded Joint Information Operations, taking the initiative to counter terrorist organizations and has raised its voice against terror financing. He expressed his appreciation for the support received in this context.
Modi mentioned that India has endured the scourge of terrorism for the past four decades, which has resulted in numerous casualties and orphaned children. He referred to the recent horrific act of terrorism in Pahalgam and expressed his gratitude to the friendly countries that stood by India during this difficult time. This attack was an open challenge to every nation and individual who believes in humanity. It is natural to question whether open support for terrorism by certain nations can be acceptable. We must state unequivocally that there can be no double standards on terrorism.
