The relationship between India and the United States has become visibly tense. Former Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Vikas Swarup has conveyed his concerns regarding the pressure being exerted on India by the Donald Trump administration, particularly in light of comments from White House trade advisor Peter Navarro who has been critical of India’s trade policies and its purchase of Russian oil. Swarup warned that the administration is attempting to pressure the Indian government, citing Navarro’s remarks. Navarro has been highly critical of India, labeling New Delhi the “maharaja of tariffs” and criticising the country for its Russian oil purchases. Swarup strongly countered, stating that India has always followed strategic autonomy and will not be “dictated” by anyone. He stated that while progress on a trade deal was anticipated, it had not materialized. Swarup expressed hope for a mutually acceptable solution but noted that the current comments from the Trump administration, particularly those from Peter Navarro, are unhelpful. Navarro justified the imposition of a 50 percent tariff on imports from India, claiming this measure was aimed at curtailing India’s financial support for Moscow amid the Ukraine conflict.
