On August 29th, India observes National Sports Day with great enthusiasm, coinciding with the start of the Men’s Hockey Asia Cup 2025 in Rajgir, Bihar. This day is dedicated to honoring Major Dhyan Chand, a legendary hockey player whose birthday is celebrated on this occasion. Widely known as the ‘Wizard of Hockey,’ Dhyan Chand led India to victory with three consecutive Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932, and 1936. In recognition of his unparalleled achievements, this day has been celebrated as National Sports Day since 2012. National Sports Day serves to remember a great player and encourages the adoption of sports and fitness as integral parts of one’s lifestyle. The day is marked by the presentation of National Sports Awards to outstanding players and coaches. This year’s event is organized under the ‘Fit India Mission’ by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The ‘Ek Ghanta Khel Ke Maidan Mein’ campaign, taking place from August 29th to 31st, encourages individuals to engage in at least an hour of physical activity daily. The Ministry’s statement underscores the initiative’s aim to highlight how at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day can help prevent lifestyle diseases.
