Carlos Alcaraz showcased a dominant performance, defeating Mattia Bellucci in straight sets during their second-round match at the US Open on Wednesday at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Alcaraz secured the win with scores of 6-1, 6-0, and 6-3, earning a spot in the third round. The world No. 2, and former 2022 champion, played exceptionally well, distinguishing himself from his earlier second-round loss of the previous year. Alcaraz gained an early lead, breaking Bellucci’s serve twice in the first set, utilizing his dynamic forehand and net skills. Bellucci was able to win one game in the first set, but was not able to change the direction of the game. After the match, Alcaraz stated, “I played great from the beginning to the last ball. I know Mattia’s level and today wasn’t his day, but I tried to make the most of his mistakes, trying to be in the match getting a good rhythm.” Alcaraz went on to say that despite needing some improvements, he was happy with how he played. In the second set, Alcaraz increased his intensity, winning 6-0 without conceding a game. He demonstrated his skills with 32 winners, an 86% success rate on first serves, and no opportunities for Bellucci to break serve. Bellucci played better in the third set, holding his serve initially and participating in longer rallies. Nevertheless, Alcaraz’s consistent play from the baseline proved too strong. The deciding break at 4-3 shifted the balance in Alcaraz’s favor, enabling him to conclude the set and the match with a score of 6-3, with Bellucci making a double fault on match point. Alcaraz will compete in the third round, moving closer to potentially winning his second US Open title with his strong play.
