The Indian cricket team is implementing the Bronco Test to assess the fitness levels of its players. Manoj Tiwary, a former player, has expressed a viewpoint that is drawing attention. Tiwary claims the introduction of the Bronco Test, which is based on a rugby fitness assessment, may be aimed at removing players like Rohit Sharma from the team. Sharma, aged 38, hopes to play until the 2027 World Cup. However, the Bronco Test could significantly impact his chances.
In an interview, Tiwary pointed out that the Bronco Test could present difficulties for Rohit Sharma, the ODI captain. He suggested that while excluding Virat Kohli from the 2027 World Cup seems improbable, he has reservations about Rohit’s involvement, given the current situation in Indian cricket. Tiwary’s perspective is that the Bronco Test is designed to influence the team’s future composition, potentially affecting the selection of players such as Rohit Sharma.
Tiwary highlighted the demanding nature of the Bronco Test and the timing of its introduction. He wondered why the test wasn’t implemented earlier, especially with the arrival of the new head coach. He questioned the origin and rationale behind this test and its possible consequences for Rohit Sharma’s place in the team. He stated that Rohit Sharma needs to focus on his fitness to overcome this challenge.
The Bronco Test, used in rugby, is considered a more challenging fitness test than the Yo-Yo test. It involves a series of shuttle runs of 20, 40, and 60 meters, which players must complete within set timeframes. The Indian team’s strength and conditioning coach, Andrew Leipus, proposed the test. He wanted to encourage fast bowlers and other players to include running in their training routines.
