Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, has accused the opposition of aiming to govern from jail, specifically in response to the 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill. He claimed that the opposition is working to turn prisons into power centers, where Chief Ministers, Prime Ministers, and other top officials would receive orders from behind bars. Shah’s remarks were made during an interview with ANI, where he discussed in depth the “The Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill.”
During the interview, Shah stated, “Even today, they are trying that if they ever go to jail, they will easily form the government from jail. The jail will be made CM House, PM House and the DGP, Chief Secretary, Cabinet Secretary or Home Secretary will take orders from the jail.” He showed confidence that the bill would pass in the Parliament, pointing to support from within the Congress and the broader opposition based on moral considerations. The Constitutional Amendment Bill, along with the Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025, were introduced in the Lok Sabha during the Parliament Monsoon Session. This bill aims to ensure that individuals holding key constitutional posts like Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, and Ministers cannot govern from jail. It also includes a provision allowing for bail within 30 days of arrest; failure to secure bail results in removal from office, with the possibility of resuming the role if bail is later granted.
