The political scene is charged up regarding the Vice Presidential election. Usually, this election follows a quiet constitutional process. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA coalition has nominated CP Radhakrishnan, a senior party leader and the Governor of Maharashtra, for the election. The opposition has put forth Justice B. Sudarshan Reddy, a former judge of the Supreme Court, which has made this contest ‘South vs. South’. CP Radhakrishnan is from Tamil Nadu and Sudarshan Reddy is from Andhra Pradesh. Now, the question is who will win this interesting battle?
Looking back at previous Vice Presidential elections, the party in power at the center has often enjoyed a landslide victory. After the BJP came into power in 2014, Jagdeep Dhankhar had the biggest win. He defeated Margaret Alva, the opposition leader, by a record number of votes, which was the biggest loss for any opposition leader since 1997. Moreover, since India’s independence, four Vice Presidents have been elected unopposed.
