North Gujarat has emerged as a prominent automobile manufacturing hub in India in recent years, with Suzuki Motor Gujarat playing a pivotal role. The Mehsana factory is capable of producing around 750,000 cars each year, playing a critical role in both the domestic and export markets. Suzuki is planning to invest approximately ₹3,200 crore to set up a fourth production line that will focus on electric vehicle production. This is part of a wider strategy, which includes a ₹7,300 crore battery plant and a ₹3,100 crore EV manufacturing unit.
Gujarat successfully attracted several major automobile companies between 2012 and 2015. The crucial moment was in 2014, when Suzuki partnered with the state government to establish a mega plant. Since then, the company has made significant investments, providing employment for numerous people and fostering the rapid development of the auto component ecosystem. The Suzuki Motor Gujarat plant is now recognized as a leading automobile production facility in the country. Gujarat’s strong port connectivity has also helped it become a significant export hub. In 2024, exports from here reached approximately ₹3,459 crore, going to countries such as South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Japan, the UAE, and Chile. The state government plans to present these accomplishments at the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conferences (VGRC), in order to attract global investors to the Gujarat automotive sector and related industries. The increased investment by Suzuki and its focus on EV production are set to create a new chapter for the automotive sector in Gujarat and across India.
