The popularity of electric vehicles is soaring in the Indian market. According to the TATA.ev India Charging Report 2025, 84% of individuals now opt for EVs, a marked increase from 74% in 2023, reflecting a rise of over 10% in just two years. This signifies the increasing integration of EVs into everyday life.
EV owners drive approximately 1,600 kilometers per month, around 40% more than drivers of petrol-fueled vehicles. This increased usage underscores the growing reliance on both the technology and the developing charging infrastructure.
The advantages of EVs include low running costs and an expanding charging network. This translates into EV owners using their vehicles for approximately 27 days each month, which is 35% higher than the usage observed among owners of internal combustion engine vehicles. EVs are now accessible across 95% of India’s road network, expanding their reach beyond urban areas to rural regions.
The evolution of charging infrastructure is critical. The report states that the number of public charging points has quadrupled since 2023, reaching 24,000 by the middle of 2025. A fast charger is now available every 50 kilometers on 91% of the National Highways. States like Karnataka, Kerala, and Punjab have achieved complete coverage.
However, there are still challenges. Approximately 12,000 of the 25,000 public chargers installed as of February 2024 were not operational. Additionally, varying apps and payment systems often complicate the process of locating and paying for charging.
The report also emphasizes the increasing demand for fast charging, with 36% of EV users viewing it as essential. In 2025, 35% of TATA.ev owners used fast chargers at least once a month, compared to 21% in 2023.
