In Raipur, the police are taking action to reduce the number of road fatalities by mandating that all two-wheeler showrooms provide a helmet with every new motorcycle. This directive was issued by Senior Superintendent of Police Dr. Lal Umed Singh. Non-compliance with this order will result in stringent measures. The Raipur police report that more than 20,495 traffic violations were issued to riders not wearing helmets during the last seven months. Despite awareness efforts, a significant portion of the population continues to disregard safety regulations, leading to a staggering 190 deaths due to road accidents within the same period. Under the Motor Vehicles Act of 1989, Section 138, two-wheeler sellers are obligated to provide a helmet with each vehicle sale; however, this rule has often been overlooked. The SSP’s directive stipulates that showroom operators violating these rules will be penalized under Motor Vehicle Rules 33-44, including the potential for license suspension or cancellation. This step is intended to increase public awareness regarding the importance of helmets, with the goal of reducing accident-related deaths.
