Instead of relying on weather applications, a village in Kerala is leveraging an automatic weather station for weather updates. The station serves as a localized source of weather data. Prior to commencing his day, local resident Anil T.R. uses the station to gather weather information. The village is pioneering the ‘Living Lab’ concept, focusing on innovative, research-based solutions.
The system became a necessity after a 2022 landslide. The weather station delivers critical updates, especially alerts for high rainfall, so that residents can be prepared. The local government intends to expand the system, installing over a dozen more stations across the panchayat’s wards. A landslide early warning system, developed by IIT-Roorkee, is also being put in place. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) played a role in the implementation of this innovative approach.
Weather information, including rainfall, wind speed, and temperature, is accessible to residents. This information is disseminated through a WhatsApp group. The ‘Living Lab’ also provides training on emergency protocols and response procedures.
