The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has made history, marking the first time an all-women team has successfully reached the summit of Mount Nun (7,135 m) in the Nun-Kun mountain range, located in Kargil. This achievement is a significant milestone in the ITBP’s mountaineering history. The expedition was initiated from the ITBP headquarters in New Delhi on July 3, 2025, with Rahul Rasgotra, IPS, Director General, ITBP, overseeing the launch. The team undertook a month-long, intensive training program in Leh, Ladakh, focusing on acclimatization and technical preparation before the ascent. The first rope team, comprised of 7 mountaineers and 3 technical members, successfully reached the summit of Mount Nun at 09:25 AM on August 13, 2025, after beginning their climb from the summit camp the previous night. The second rope team, consisting of 7 mountaineers and 2 technical members, reached the summit on August 14, 2025, at 08:50 AM, thus completing this historic feat. Mount Nun, known as the highest peak in Jammu and Kashmir, presents a formidable challenge with its difficult terrain, including steep ice-rock formations, sharp ridges, crevassed glaciers, and unpredictable weather. It is considered a crucial training ground for expeditions to 8,000-meter peaks, requiring exceptional endurance, technical expertise, and strategic planning. The success of this historic all-women expedition further underscores the ITBP’s mountaineering achievements. The force has successfully scaled six of the world’s fourteen 8,000-meter peaks, including Mount Everest and Mount Kanchenjunga, with five successful ascents of Mount Everest to their name. The Mount Nun expedition exemplifies the ITBP’s excellence, empowerment, leadership, and operational capabilities in high-altitude environments.
