Bihar’s road infrastructure is undergoing a digital transformation led by the Urban Development and Housing Department. The department has mandated a comprehensive digital mapping of all roads in urban areas, with reports due by August 20, 2025. A unique feature of the project is the color-coding system, which will categorize roads based on the agency responsible for their construction. National highways will be designated red, state highways green, roads built by the Rural Works Department black, municipal roads yellow, district council roads blue-pink, those by the Local Area Engineering Organization blue, and roads from other departments purple. This color-coded approach aims to improve identification and aid in effective urban development planning. Municipal bodies will be required to provide detailed information about each road, including dimensions, construction dates, cost estimations, and current conditions. This digital record is expected to facilitate road maintenance and assist in future urban planning. The department has instructed all relevant officials to ensure the prompt execution of this initiative. This move comes after Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s digital interaction with electricity consumers on August 12, 2025, promoting the ‘Chief Minister Electricity Consumer Assistance Scheme,’ offering substantial savings to households. The Urban Development Department’s directive is a significant step toward organizing the road network across Bihar’s urban areas. The color-based mapping and digital records will help make road management easier, support maintenance, and ensure transparency in future project planning, thus contributing to the goal of a digitally and developed Bihar.
