General elections are slated for February next year in Bangladesh. The announcement was made by Professor Mohammad Yunus, the head of Bangladesh’s interim government. In light of this, the Election Commission is reported to have developed a new plan aimed at maintaining law and order during the elections. This plan includes a proposal to incorporate the army, navy, and air force into the law enforcement structure.
The EC approved a proposal to amend the RPO (Representation of the People Order) during a meeting on Monday. If the proposal is enacted, it would remove the need for separate orders to define the roles of these forces during the election. Soldiers would gain the authority to perform duties at polling stations, similar to police, including the ability to make arrests without warrants.
