In a show of support for Imran Khan, PTI supporters took to the streets across Pakistan on Tuesday, prompting a police response that resulted in over 500 arrests. The protests centered on demands for Khan’s release. Lahore saw the majority of the arrests.
Imran Khan was convicted on corruption charges and has been incarcerated for two years. PTI officials confirmed substantial support for the demonstrations. Zulfi Bukhari, a prominent PTI figure, pointed out that Khan’s imprisonment had reached its second anniversary. He cited concerns regarding Khan’s access to his legal team and family, and other rights. Bukhari also cited the government’s actions to curtail the protests, including the banning of gatherings, blocking of major roads, damage to party property, and raids on the homes of party activists. He also noted that more than 500 PTI members were arrested in Punjab alone, including members of parliament. The protests were intended to remain peaceful. Section 144 was implemented in Punjab, leading to arrests. The rallies have gained significant attention on social media. Musarrat Jamshed Cheema, a party leader, condemned the government’s actions, including the raids, while accusing the Punjab Chief Minister of acting like a dictator, highlighting the pre-emptive nature of the raids.
