A significant breakthrough in Chhattisgarh’s mineral sector has been achieved with the discovery of nickel, chromium, and platinum group elements (PGEs). This important find, made by Deccan Gold Mining Limited (DGML) in the Mahasamund district, marks a pivotal advancement in the state’s mineral development. The Bhalukona–Jamnidih block, encompassing approximately 3,000 hectares, is the site of this promising discovery. Initial exploration by the Geological Survey of India (GSI) indicated the presence of these valuable minerals, leading the Directorate of Geology and Mining (DGM) to conduct an e-auction. DGML won the auction on March 6, 2023, with a winning bid of 21%. With the support of DGM Chhattisgarh, exploration activities have been expedited, including geological mapping, rock chip sampling, drone-based magnetic surveys, and Induced Polarization (IP) surveys. The initial results have been encouraging, with a 700-meter mineralized zone identified within potential mafic-ultramafic rock formations. Geophysical surveys suggest the presence of sulfide minerals up to 300 meters, highlighting the area’s substantial mineral potential. The proximity of the Kelverdbury block, previously awarded to M/s Vedanta Limited, further enhances the strategic importance of the Mahasamund area as a potential hub for essential mineral resources. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed his pleasure at the discovery, emphasizing its importance for securing essential resources and supporting the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative. The state government is committed to supporting comprehensive mineral exploration and development, particularly with strategic minerals, as evidenced by the upcoming exploration plans. The state has successfully auctioned 51 mineral blocks, including deposits of critical minerals like graphite, nickel, chromium, PGEs, lithium, glauconite, phosphorite, and graphite-vanadium. Furthermore, 6 tin blocks have been transferred to the Ministry of Mines for auction. The creation of a Critical Mineral Cell within DGM, Chhattisgarh, is designed to encourage research and collaboration to foster mineral exploration and refinement. Mr. P. Dayanand, Secretary, Department of Mineral Resources, stated that this discovery represents a strategic leap, highlighting the increasing global demand for critical minerals such as nickel and PGEs for green energy and high-tech applications. Chhattisgarh is committed to playing a key role in India’s strategic mineral landscape, with full support in place. Experts note that this discovery holds promise not only for enhancing Chhattisgarh’s mineral wealth but also for fostering the discovery of crucial minerals for modern technology, national security, and clean energy.
