Shibu Soren, the founder of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and an iconic figure in the movement for Jharkhand’s statehood, has passed away after battling illness. Affectionately referred to as “Dishom Guru,” Soren devoted his life to improving the lives of Adivasi communities. His activism began with the Santhal Sudhar Samaj, where he organized tribals against exploitative practices. Born in Nemhra village on January 11, 1944, Soren’s early life and the death of his father shaped his commitment to activism. He played a central role in the formation of the JMM in 1972. He served as Chief Minister of Jharkhand for three terms. Soren’s political career was a complex blend of triumphs and challenges. He won many elections and secured various cabinet positions, but faced accusations and legal troubles at different points, including allegations of inciting violence and involvement in a murder. These events, as well as political instability, often interrupted his time in power.
