Donald Trump has responded positively to reports suggesting India is stopping its oil imports from Russia, calling the move a ‘good step.’ This comment follows the US’s recent imposition of a 25% tariff on Indian imports, linked to India’s ongoing trade with Russia, including the purchase of crude oil and military equipment. Trump hinted that further penalties against India could be on the horizon.
Trump’s statements, made during an interview, came in response to queries about potential penalties and a possible conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had previously stated that energy procurement decisions are made considering national interests and market dynamics, and they were unaware of any specific changes regarding Indian oil imports from Russia. This followed criticism from US officials, including Trump and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, regarding India’s continued purchase of discounted Russian crude oil, despite Western sanctions. Trump had previously voiced strong criticism of India’s trade relationship with Russia.
