Manipur’s President’s rule has been extended for six months, effective August 13, 2025. The initial imposition of President’s rule occurred on February 13, 2025, following the resignation of CM N. Biren Singh amid the state’s ethnic violence. The extension was proposed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The Rajya Sabha’s Parliamentary Bulletin stated that the motion, introduced by Amit Shah, was approved. The motion seeks Parliamentary approval to extend the President’s proclamation implemented in Manipur under Article 356 of the Constitution on February 13, 2025. This extension is for six months, starting from August 13, 2025.
According to Article 356 (3) of the Constitution, President’s rule is initially enforced for six months. However, with Parliament’s approval, it can be extended every six months for up to three years. The ongoing ethnic tensions and violence between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities, since May 3, 2023, have caused over 250 fatalities and displaced more than 60,000 individuals. The movement of Meitei people on National Highways 2 and 37, which pass through Kuki-Zo-dominated areas, has been disrupted since May 2023. The theft of more than 6,000 police weapons in the state also adds to the instability.
