Online cyber fraud is a persistent issue, prompting many to rely on ATMs for secure cash transactions. However, residents of Ranchi are now facing a new wave of attacks targeting ATMs, especially those without security guards. The public is urged to remain vigilant when using ATMs, as a moment of carelessness could lead to substantial financial loss.
Fraudsters are actively exploiting ATMs across multiple police station jurisdictions within Ranchi. They primarily target individuals who are withdrawing cash, using methods that trap the debit card within the machine. This provides an opportunity for the criminals to carry out fraudulent transactions.
This criminal group has been operating for a significant time, targeting vulnerable individuals across different areas of Ranchi. Between February 3rd and June 22nd, seven different locations were targeted, resulting in large sums of money being stolen. The failure to take decisive action against these criminals has allowed them to continue their activities, posing a significant challenge for the police force. The criminals trick victims by using fake phone numbers and directing them away from the ATM, giving them time to execute their fraudulent activities.
If a card is stuck, a scammer offers a fake number and directs them to a distant ATM or bank where they can get help, enabling the criminals to commit fraud.
