Pakistani General Syed Asim Munir faced a public protest during his visit to Washington. A group of Pakistani protesters gathered outside Munir’s hotel, shouting slogans and expressing their disapproval. The protesters chanted, “Pakistaniyon ke qatil,” “You are a coward,” and “Shame on you,” as Munir was leaving the hotel. Security personnel prevented the protesters from entering the hotel premises, leading to disagreements. The protest was reportedly organized by supporters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), who had announced their intention to protest Munir’s visit. PTI posted a video on social media documenting the protest, stating the aim to hold General Munir accountable for alleged crimes against the Pakistani people. The video included a screen displaying a photo of Asim Munir and the messages, “Mass Murderer Asim Munir,” “Democracy dies when guns speak,” and “Asim Munir, your time is up. Pakistan will rise.” In May, the Pakistani federal cabinet approved the promotion of General Asim Munir to Field Marshal, despite criticisms of the military’s performance. The promotion was justified by the government, citing his leadership during Operation Bunyanum Marsoos and the confrontation with India. Munir is only the second army officer in Pakistan’s history to become a Field Marshal. Ayub Khan, Pakistan’s president from 1958 to 1969, was the first to hold this rank, which he had self-appointed after a coup.
