An extraordinary case has emerged from Saraikela, Jharkhand, involving a husband, wife, and the wife’s boyfriend, which has led to a series of unexpected events. A village panchayat intervened and made a controversial ruling, ordering the wife to leave her husband and be with her boyfriend. A fine was also levied against the boyfriend.
The incident happened in the village of Palashdih, under the jurisdiction of the RIT police station. The boyfriend and another individual were caught by villagers while visiting the married woman. The villagers then called for a panchayat meeting, which ultimately decreed that the woman should go with her boyfriend in front of the husband. The villagers objected to any police involvement in the situation.
A young man from the Chilgu Panchayat in Chandil, along with a friend, had arrived at Palashdih on Monday night to meet the woman. The villagers confronted them as they attempted to leave with the woman. The boyfriend and his friend were beaten, and all three were detained.
When authorities learned of the situation, SDPO Sameer Kumar Savaiya and RIT police station in-charge Vinay Kumar Singh arrived with a team. They attempted to mediate, but the villagers opposed their involvement, viewing the issue as a social matter. Due to the villagers’ objections, the police had to withdraw, but they remained present to prevent any escalation.
Following social traditions, a village assembly meeting was held, with representatives from the woman’s marital and parental families, as well as the boyfriend’s village panchayat, coming together. The panchayat, which went on from morning to evening, delivered a surprising decision to the husband: The woman was sent with her boyfriend, and a fine of one lakh rupees was imposed on the boyfriend. The couple divorced, and the woman departed with her boyfriend. The case is generating a lot of discussion.
