Mistral AI, a French artificial intelligence lab, has launched Magistral, a reasoning model positioned as the first of its kind in Europe. This innovation is intended to rival established players like OpenAI and Google. Magistral operates by breaking down complex issues into manageable steps, mirroring the way humans think. The model is offered in two configurations: Magistral Small, made freely available under an open-source license, and Magistral Medium, aimed at corporate users. The latter is accessible through Mistral’s Le Chat platform, as well as through partnerships with companies like Amazon SageMaker. While the model’s performance may trail that of some of its competitors in certain benchmarks, Mistral is focusing on its capacity to provide traceable decision-making in regulated sectors, and is pushing for community development through an open-source version.
