Intel lauds chip coverage; govt extends an invitation

On Tuesday, Randhir Thakur, senior vice-president at Intel, who can be president of Intel Foundry Services, lauded the ₹76,000 crore incentive scheme for semiconductor design and manufacturing in India, a proposal that was accredited by the Union cabinet on 15 December.

“Congrats to @GoI_MeitY @AshwiniVaishnaw @Rajeev_GoI for Semiconductor design & manufacturing incentives for India as a hub for electronics & semiconductors. Glad to see a plan laid out for all elements of the provision chain: expertise, design, manufacturing, check, packaging & logistics,” Thakur said on Twitter. Ashwini Vaishnaw, minister of communications, electronics and information technology, responded, “Intel, welcome to India.”

While Thakur’s feedback are being interpreted as an expression of curiosity for manufacturing in India, Intel stated it has no such plan—a minimum of for now.

In response to an e-mail question, an Intel spokesperson stated, “Intel India is Intel’s largest design centre exterior of the US, and we’ve got been investing in the direction of accelerating innovation and design engineering in India over the past 20 years. However, we’ve got no new plan to announce presently.”

Thakur experiences to Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger. He has additionally been inducted as a board member of Tata Electronics, a Tata group firm planning to enterprise into semiconductor manufacturing. The Tata group put aside as much as $300 million to construct a semiconductor ATMP unit in India and has been in talks with a number of states to arrange the plant, Reuters reported lately. Thakur took up a board place at Tata Electronics in August whereas persevering with in his current function at Intel, Mint lately reported.

Tata Electronics didn’t instantly reply to an e-mail looking for remark.

“I think the minister’s tweet has been misinterpreted. While Intel has praised the government’s incentive package, the government’s asking them to come to India,” stated Rajeev Chandrasekhar, minister of state for electronics and knowledge expertise.

“After the government’s semiconductor policy and package announcement, there has been 100% significant interest from major global players in semiconductor manufacturing, design, testing, packaging as well as research.  Therefore, all major players—and there are a handful of them in the semiconductor space—are actively looking at India and much more seriously than before. Our policy and package are a clear signal to the world that India is ready and has the ambition to become a significant player in the space,” Chandrasekhar stated.

“Setting up a semiconductor fab is the most complex manufacturing process and it will take painstaking work from both government as well as interested companies to take it forward. It is clear that there is significant interest in all the areas, including design, compound semiconductors, silicon semiconductors, testing and packaging, but some will take a longer lead time than others and some will be rolled out much quicker. So, design, compound semiconductors, silicon semiconductors, testing and packaging, et al will take shorter lead times,” he added.

Industry analysts consider the tweet by Intel was purposeful.

“Intel is a vital participant in your entire semiconductor worth chain, and the federal government’s announcement is a promising transfer. So not simply Intel, different gamers can be trying ahead to it. A robust semiconductor ecosystem will push the general Make in India programme,” stated Tarun Pathak, analysis director at Counterpoint, a market researcher.

Intel has manufacturing crops in a number of nations; so, in the event that they need to shift some portion of it to India, they must see what benefit they are going to get, based on Jaipal Singh, analysis supervisor, consumer units at IDC India. “Earlier, there was no incentive from the federal government, which is going on now. We will see these firms provoke a few of the foundry enterprise to India. We additionally have to remember that the foundry enterprise may be very capital intensive and requires a long-term sustainable plan to shift it to a different nation,” he stated.

India goals to construct greater than 20 items for semiconductor designing and manufacturing within the subsequent six years and can prepare 85,000 semiconductor engineers.
