Odds ‘very excessive’ of US army battle with China, prime Republican says

Smith mentioned the United States must be able to discourage China from army motion towards Taiwan, “but I’m fully confident we can avoid that conflict if we take the right approach.”

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin earlier this month mentioned he significantly doubted that ramped-up Chinese army actions close to the Taiwan Strait had been an indication of an imminent invasion of the island by Beijing.
