MS Dhoni conceded it was nearly inconceivable to defend 97 after Chennai Super Kings went right down to Mumbai Indians by 5 wickets and crashed out of the playoffs race for IPL 2022.

Besides, CSK were perhaps plagued with the captaincy chaos. MS Dhoni had stepped down as skipper and Ravindra Jadeja was named the new captain two days before the start of IPL 2022.

With their playoffs hopes almost crushed, Ravindra Jadeja handed the captaincy back to MS Dhoni midway during the season.

CSK were also bogged down by injuries. Deepak Hooda was ruled out of the entire season while Jadeja was forced out with an injury with three matches left in the campaign.

Before the start of the match against Mumbai Indians, MS Dhoni had said it would be very difficult to replace Ravindra Jadeja.
